NETS-S is the National Educational Technology Standards for Students. The standards were created by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) in 2007. ISTE also has standards for teachers and administrators.

The standards are intended to "help students prepare to work, live, and contribute to the social and civic fabric of their communities" (ISTE website). ISTE believes these standards are key to teaching effectively in our technological world:

  • Demonstrate creativity and innovation
  • Communicate and collaborate
  • Conduct research and use information
  • Think critically, solve problems, and make decisions
  • Digital citizenship
  • Use technology effectively and productively

Since technology shifts our society and expectations, teaching must also change. ISTE says "today's educators must provide a learning environment that takes students beyond the walls of their classrooms and into a world of endless opportunities" (ISTE website). The standards have been adopted throughout the United States and other countries and may be used for all educational levels and subjects. They are valuable for teachers to help students develop the skills and understanding needed in our world.
